On 16 September 2026, Professor Maciej \u017bukowski, former Rector of Pozna\u0144 University of Economics and Business, delivered a special lecture entitled: \u201cPUEB in a Sustainable Environment: History, People and Infrastructure\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the event, Professor Maciej \u017bukowski presented the history of Pozna\u0144 University of Economics and Business, highlighting the key stages of its development over the past one hundred years. He recalled the University\u2019s beginnings as the Higher School of Commerce, its infrastructural and organisational development, as well as the resumption of its activities after the Second World War.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In the following decades, the University systematically expanded its teaching and research activities, increasing the number of students, staff members and organisational units. Professor Maciej \u017bukowski also referred to events that reflected the University\u2019s growing position and recognition. One of them was the visit of Margaret Thatcher. Particular importance, however, was attached to 2008, when the institution was granted university status and adopted the name Pozna\u0144 University of Economics and Business. As Professor Maciej \u017bukowski emphasised, this was one of the most important moments in its history, confirming the scale of development of its research and teaching activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The following years brought further modernisation and ongoing adaptation of the University to rapidly changing economic, social and technological conditions. By 2019, the University\u2019s organisational structure already comprised nine institutes. During the same period, the University was visited by Professor Michael E. Porter, one of the world\u2019s best-known scholars in the fields of competitiveness and strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another symbolic moment came in 2024, when, for the first time in the history of Pozna\u0144 University of Economics and Business, a woman assumed the position of Rector. This event was presented as another important milestone in the institution’s development and as evidence of the changes taking place within the University.
A significant part of the lecture also focused on the University\u2019s current activities in sustainable development. PUEB focuses its environmental initiatives primarily on infrastructure, sustainable mobility, reducing resource consumption and waste management. Measures to improve energy efficiency include the thermal modernisation of buildings, the modernisation of heating systems, and the development of energy-efficient lighting. These actions have contributed to a 25% reduction in electricity consumption over a six-year period. The University is also increasing its use of renewable energy sources. Photovoltaic panels are being installed on Building D, and since April 2025, 25% of the electricity purchased by PUEB has come from renewable sources.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During a walk around the campus, participants had the opportunity to see many of these initiatives first-hand, in particular the Collegium Altum building following its comprehensive energy-efficiency renovation, as well as the ongoing thermal modernisation works in Building B. PUEB also implements solutions consistent with the principles of the circular economy, including measures to reduce water consumption, the development of drinking-water stations, waste separation and collection, the reuse of equipment and furnishings, and the Givebox, which enables members of the University community to exchange used items. The University is also creating green spaces to provide students and staff with areas for rest and regeneration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The initiatives presented during the lecture show that the University\u2019s contemporary development encompasses not only research and teaching activities, but also the practical implementation of environmental responsibility principles. At the same time, they reflect the vision presented during the lecture of PUEB\u2019s further development as a university serving the economy, people and the planet. In this way, the University’s history, which began exactly one hundred years ago in a small tenement building in Pozna\u0144, remains a story of continuous development, adaptation to a changing world, and responsibility to its social and economic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
